Summer Is When Kitchen Drains Go to Die
Your kitchen drain handles more abuse between Memorial Day and Labor Day than the entire rest of the year combined.
Think about what changes in a West Palm Beach summer. The grill comes out, which means burger grease and marinade. The kids are home, which means more meals and more dishes. Out of town guests roll through, which means three days of cooking for ten people instead of two. And every bit of that extra food waste has to go somewhere, and for most homeowners, that somewhere is the garbage disposal.
The disposal can take a lot. What it cannot take is being treated like a trash can. The most common kitchen plumbing emergency we respond to in the summer is the same one almost every time: a sink full of standing, greasy water on the night of a party, with a disposal that hums but will not clear. The good news is that nearly all of it is preventable once you understand what actually causes it.
What a Garbage Disposal Actually Does (And What It Cannot Do)
There is a widespread myth that a garbage disposal shreds food into a fine liquid and dissolves it away. It does not.
A disposal uses spinning impellers, not sharp blades, to break food into small pieces, which then have to travel through your drain line and out to the sewer. That is the whole job. It does not dissolve anything, it does not digest grease, and it does not give you license to push half a Thanksgiving dinner down the sink. Everything that goes in still has to fit through and flow down a pipe that is only about an inch and a half wide.
Once you picture it that way, the rules for what belongs in a disposal and what does not start to make a lot more sense.
The Foods That Quietly Destroy Your Disposal and Drains
Some foods are obviously bad ideas. Others seem perfectly harmless and cause the worst damage of all. Keep these out of your disposal and your drain:
- Grease, oil, and fat. This is the number one killer, and it deserves its own section below. Bacon drippings, burger grease, and oil poured down the drain are the single most common cause of clogged kitchen lines.
- Fibrous and stringy vegetables. Celery, corn husks, onion skins, artichokes, and asparagus have long fibers that wrap around the impellers and tangle like dental floss in a fan.
- Starchy expanders. Pasta, rice, and potato peels swell when they sit in water and turn into a thick paste that coats and blocks your pipes. A handful of rice can expand into a drain clogging glob hours after it goes down.
- Coffee grounds. They look harmless because they are fine, but they clump together into a dense sludge at the bottom of your trap. Coffee grounds belong in the garden or the trash, never the sink.
- Bones, pits, and shells. Chicken bones, fruit pits, and shellfish shells are harder than the disposal components themselves. They do not break down, they just bang around and dull the unit.
- Produce stickers. Those little fruit and vegetable labels do not dissolve. They stick to the inside of pipes and to pump components and quietly cause problems over time.
- Anything that is not food. Twist ties, rubber bands, sponge bits, and bottle caps that fall in by accident are a leading cause of jams.
You will notice eggshells are not on this list. The advice on eggshells is mixed. They will not destroy your disposal, but the thin membrane inside can wrap the impellers and the gritty bits add to sediment, so we suggest tossing them rather than grinding them.
Grease Is the Number One Killer
If there is one habit worth breaking this summer, it is pouring grease down the drain.
Here is what actually happens. Hot bacon grease or burger drippings pour down as a liquid, so it feels harmless. But a few feet down the pipe, where it is cooler and dark, that grease congeals back into a solid. It coats the inside of your pipe like cholesterol in an artery, and every bit of food debris that comes after it sticks to that greasy layer. Over a summer of cookouts, the opening in your pipe shrinks until water can barely squeeze through, and then one night it stops completely.
This is exactly the kind of buildup that chemical drain cleaners cannot fix and often make worse. The fix is simple and free. Let grease cool and solidify in the pan, then scrape it into a can or a jar and throw it in the trash. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before rinsing. Your pipes will thank you in August.
How to Use Your Disposal the Right Way
Used correctly, a garbage disposal is a genuinely useful tool. Here is how to get years of trouble free service out of it:
- Always run cold water, never hot. Cold water keeps any small amount of fat solid so it gets chopped and flushed through instead of melting and coating the pipe. Run the water before you turn the disposal on and keep it running for fifteen to twenty seconds after it finishes.
- Feed it small amounts at a time. Do not stuff the chamber full and flip the switch. Add scraps gradually and let the unit catch up.
- Stick to soft, biodegradable scraps. The disposal is for the bits left on a plate, not for clearing out the back of the refrigerator.
- Clean it regularly. Grinding a handful of ice cubes scours buildup off the impellers, and a few citrus peels afterward leave it smelling fresh. This is the right way to deodorize, not by pouring chemicals down it.
Signs Your Disposal or Drain Is in Trouble
Your kitchen usually warns you before it fails completely. Watch for these:
- Persistent foul odors that come back even after cleaning, which usually means food is trapped and rotting in the line.
- A sink that drains slowly or holds standing water, the classic sign of a grease and debris clog building up.
- Gurgling sounds from the drain, which means air is struggling past a partial blockage.
- A disposal that hums but will not turn, which means it is jammed and needs to be cleared before the motor overheats.
- Frequent need to hit the reset button, a sign the unit is straining or failing.
- Water leaking under the sink, which can come from the disposal seals, the drain connections, or the trap.
DIY Fixes You Can Safely Try
Before you call anyone, there are a few safe things to try with a jammed or sluggish disposal:
- Hit the reset button. There is a small red or black button on the bottom of the unit. If the disposal went dead, this clears the overload trip about half the time.
- Use the hex wrench. Most disposals come with a small allen wrench that fits a socket on the underside. Turning it back and forth manually frees a jam caused by a stuck object.
- Never put your hand in the disposal. Even with the power off, the impellers and any lodged bones or shells can cut you. Use tongs or pliers to fish out a visible object.

When to Call a Professional
Some problems are past the point of a reset button. Call a plumber when:
- The same clog keeps coming back within days, which means the real blockage is deeper in the line, not in the disposal.
- More than one fixture is affected, such as the dishwasher backing up into the sink, which points to a problem in the shared drain line.
- You see water leaking under the cabinet, which needs to be sealed before it damages the cabinet floor and invites mold in our humidity.
- The disposal jams repeatedly or the motor has stopped responding to the reset.
